There is an extremely long history behind surveying stretching as far back as the Greeks with their methods of geology. An example of when surveying skills came in useful was in Egypt when the Nile River would flood and wipe out the boundaries for the farm lands. To establish the boundaries surveyors would use geology to measure accurately the space for each farmer.

This form of land surveying was used from around 3000BC on wards and the methods used have not changed that much but the tools in which they use have been developed greatly over the years.

To become a land surveyor there are a number of ways you can gain access to it as a career and there are plenty of colleges that provide surveying courses you need to take.

Below are some of the ways that you can access the land surveying industry and also the basic skills and interests you will require to become a successful surveyor.

• Surveyors will need to have very good maths, science and IT knowledge and you will spend a lot of time working with data bases.
• Surveyors will also need to have a great understanding of the planning and environmental regulations surrounding health and safety of surveying work.
• Surveyors must have an understanding of how the surveying technology works as well as the CAD systems.
• Surveyors should have the ability to carry your work out to an extremely high level of accuracy.

These are just some of the skills that will be useful for you to have if you are interested in becoming a surveyor, but as well as these you will have to have the correct surveying qualifications.

Qualifications For Surveyors

There are certain qualifications you will need to work in surveying which can be any of the following degrees that would have to be accredited by the Royal Institution for Chartered Surveyors.

You would have to choose one of the degree subjects that relates to surveying which could be any of the following; geomatics, surveyors or civil engineering.

Once you have your degree you will more than likely be expected to take surveying courses that will keep you up to date with any changes in regulations or even with new equipment through out your career by your employer.
